Predictions

Every forecast, scored a step later.

An entity forecasts the next step from its own view, and the run records the forecast and its error. A trained surrogate predicts further ahead, and says it is a surrogate.

An SO-101 arm in simulation lifts a white cube from a blue pad toward an orange pad; a translucent blue copy of the arm shows where its policy plans to be half a second later.
Recorded in the workbench: an SO-101 arm in simulation, the kind of run its surrogate learns from.

Forecast, then score

A forecast is a field of the run.

Before anything moves, each entity forecasts from what it sees. After the step, the run records what was forecast and the error against what happened.

How predictions are made and scoredEach step, every entity first forecasts the next value of what it sees with its own model, persistence, trend or an exponential average. Then the world steps. The run records the forecast as pred and the error, actual minus forecast, as err. A surrogate trained on recorded runs predicts many steps ahead, and every answer it gives carries reality surrogate.trains on runsWhat an entity seesnames it is allowed to readIts modelpersistence · trend · ewmaThe stepupdates, systems, physicspred.* and err.*recorded in the runA trained surrogatereality: surrogateHow predictions are made and scoredEach step, every entity first forecasts the next value of what it sees with its own model, persistence, trend or an exponential average. Forecasts inside a world

The market's trend misses by 9 cents.

In the Hormuz world at escalation 1.8, the mean absolute error of each oil-price forecast over 120 days (case-studies/predictions/stats.json).

Each sees only its own. A forecast may read only what its entity sees. The validator refuses an equation that reads anything else, by name. A surrogate says so. Every answer of a surrogate carries reality: surrogate. It is never a simulator's evidence, and never physical. Capital forecasts are sealed. The weekly capital forecaster's forecasts are sealed when written, and scored only under a seal that came first.
